U14 Lions win the League

Mowbray Rangers Lions U14’s were chasing a league and cup double to cap off a wonderful season. Unfortunately the cup didn’t happen due to a heart-breaking yet very fulfilling defeat to “the best side in the county” the Lions drew the cup semi final 1-1 after being ahead for a large part of the game against division 1 champions Ayelstone Park, eventually running out of steam and being beaten 5-1 after extra time in a game that was hard fought and very tight the quality of the Leicester side shone through in extra time, a very satisfying performance from the Melton side proving they could “mix it” with the big boys. On to the second part of the double....the league, with Mowbray beating second place Thurmaston at the beginning of April it meant they only needed a point from the remaining 2 games to secure the second league title in a row. Lions travelled to Kirby Muxloe this Sunday knowing a point would secure the division 3 title. The game started very much in favour of the home side with Mowbray struggling to get into their usual high standards early on, Kirby threatened but couldn’t get past the Mowbray defence or goalkeeper Henry Jones, it wasn’t until 15 minutes into the game Lions started to turn it on, the first goal came from midfielder Jack York who latched on to Bayley Purkis pass to fire the ball into the top corner from well outside the box to score a worldie and make it 1-0 to the Lions. This goal sparked the league leaders into life and they started to dominate the game, the second goal also scored by York came a few minutes later when a corner whipped in by Purkis found forward Jai Wedgwood who superbly headed down for Jack York at the back post to volley home and make it 2-0. The first half settled the game and just before the break the score was 3-0 and a sensational hat trick from York was complete. The third and final goal of the game came from some wonderful wide play again from Purkis as he crossed in to the near post he found Brook Isherwood who superbly flicked the ball on to the penalty spot to find onrushing goal getter York to head home, kissing the bar on the way in...another wonderful goal! The second half was played out with both sides creating chances but none threatening either goalkeeper, in a scrappy sort of second half Mowbray knew the damage was done from the first half, some solid defending from Stokes, Cooke, Radford Hodges and Townend to keep another clean sheet they played out a excellent 3-0 win to secure the title and spark jubilant scenes at the final whistle. The Lions second league title in a row has topped off a wonderful campaign which has seen them develop and enjoy their football and become a very hard team to beat. Manager Clarke was again full of praise for the boys in red and white, commenting on their excellent spirit and desire quoting “I’m so proud of this wonderful group of young men” Lions have their final league game of the season next week away at Community Football Academy hoping they can go through the season only losing one league game.
